KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo made official what had seemed obvious for weeks, announcing that right-hander Zack Greinke will start Wednesday’s wild-card game at Chase Field.

“There’s no mystery to it,” Lovullo said. “We just wanted to walk through the process and do it the right way and let him know. It’s official. He’ll be starting on Wednesday.”

Greinke gave up two runs in four-plus innings on Friday night against the Royals, a so-so outing that came on the heels of his worst start of the year, when he gave up eight runs in four innings against the Marlins on Sept. 22.

After a shaky debut year with the Diamondbacks, Greinke’s performance this season was more in line with what the club thought it was getting when it invested $206.5 million in him two offseasons ago. In 32 starts, he posted a 3.20 ERA in 202 1/3 innings.

“He’s been everything that we needed all year long,” Lovullo said. “I don’t think that’s going to change in one game. I know he’s going to be ready for Wednesday.”

Greinke and the Diamondbacks will face the Colorado Rockies in the do-or-die game on Wednesday evening. In five starts against them this season, Greinke has a 3.41 ERA in 34 1/3 innings.

Mathis looking to show he’s healthy

Catcher Jeff Mathis is in the Diamondbacks’ lineup on Saturday and expects to play three or four innings, his first game action in five weeks as he looks to show he’s a viable option to start Wednesday’s wild-card game.

Mathis hasn’t played since suffering an avulsion fracture in his right hand when he was struck by a foul ball on Aug. 22.

Lovullo seems to prefer Mathis to catch Greinke on Wednesday, but the club wants to be sure Mathis will be able to make a positive contribution despite playing through discomfort in the hand.

“There’s some things that I’m sure will be lingering for a little while, but it feels good,” Mathis said. “Just ready to get back out there.”

Catcher Chris Iannetta is Lovullo’s other option; he has caught each of Greinke’s past seven starts.

Mathis has said that he feels fine throwing but still has discomfort when swinging the bat.

Lovullo has said this week that he’s going to rely heavily on how Mathis says he’s feeling when determining what to do on Wednesday.

“It’s something that’s been on my mind the last two weeks,” Mathis said. “I’m grateful that he trusts me, and all I can do is be honest with him, too, about where I’m at and how I feel. That’s kind of what tonight and the next three or four days will be about.”

WILD-CARD GAME INFO: How to watch, what to know

Reliever Sherfy’s status in doubt

Right-hander Jimmie Sherfy is dealing with right triceps tightness, a potentially significant setback for a reliever who had emerged as a trusted option for Lovullo.

Sherfy has not pitched since Sept. 24, and Lovullo said the rookie will need to throw in some sort of game environment in the coming days for the club to feel comfortable adding him to the roster for Wednesday’s wild-card game.

Lovullo seemed to intimate that Sherfy won’t pitch Saturday or Sunday but could throw in an instructional league game on Monday or Tuesday.

Sherfy has not allowed a run in 10 2/3 innings in the majors, emerging in the bullpen at a time when the club has been in need of reliable options ahead of setup man Archie Bradley and closer Fernando Rodney.

Peralta exits early

Outfielder David Peralta left Saturday’s game with tightness in his neck and back, but both he and Lovullo expect him to return to the lineup for Sunday’s regular-season finale.

Peralta said he woke up Saturday morning feeling tight but felt good enough to play after receiving treatment from the training staff. It started to stiffen up during the game, at which point he was removed.

“I didn’t want to do anything crazy or swing and make it, like, really bad,” Peralta said, “because the important day is Wednesday.”
