Follow Nick Piecoro’s updates from Kansas City as the Arizona Diamondbacks begin their final series of the regular season.

Kendrick sends plane to Puerto Rico

KANSAS CITY – It took four days for Diamondbacks outfielder Rey Fuentes to get word that his family in Puerto Rico was safe after Hurricane Maria tore through the island last week. He won’t have to worry about them anymore.

Fuentes said Diamondbacks owner Ken Kendrick sent a private plane to Puerto Rico on Friday to transport Fuentes’ parents and one of his sisters.

“They should be on their way to Arizona already,” Fuentes said on Friday afternoon at Kauffman Stadium, where the Diamondbacks were preparing for their season-ending series with the Kansas City Royals. “It’s just a blessing and I’m really, really grateful for it.”

Fuentes said his dad had to drive more than a half hour to get phone service to call him last week, and what he described about the situation at home left Fuentes concerned.

“They’re looting, there’s no electricity, no water – everybody is panicking,” Fuentes said. “It’s basically survival mode right now.

“After that, he kept going to that spot and we could talk a little and he was giving me updates. I told him I was going to do everything I could to bring him out here. I could hear in his voice that he was pretty scared for my family because it’s not about the water or the food, it’s just about people trying to loot him and him getting hurt or my family getting hurt. That was the most terrifying thing for me.”

Fuentes said he’s been “basically a mess” when he’s been away from the stadium, but when Assistant General Manager Jared Porter told him this week that Kendrick was sending his plane, it felt like a weight was lifted from his shoulders.

“I got chills because I knew they were going to be OK,” Fuentes said. “Kendrick just doing that from the bottom of his heart was truly amazing to me.”

Mathis’ return pushed back

Catcher Jeff Mathis was hoping to return from the disabled list on Friday, but manager Torey Lovullo said Mathis and the medical staff determined he needed at least another day.

“I feel very strongly that something will happen in the next several days where he’ll get behind the plate and catch in a game,” Lovullo said.

Mathis, who is recovering from a fractured hand, is hoping to show he’s an option to catch right-hander Zack Greinke in Wednesday’s wild-card game.

Lovullo said that in order for him to feel comfortable starting Mathis on Wednesday, he would need to see him play one of the final two games.

Owings still an option

Though Lovullo appeared to rule out infielder/outfielder Chris Owings last week as anything but a pinch-runner for the wild-card game, he seemed more open to the possibility when asked on Friday.

Lovullo said Owings, who is working his way back from a fractured right middle finger, is scheduled to play in instructional league games next week. And while Lovullo said Owings’ potential role in the wild card game would be “first and foremost” as a runner, he didn’t close the door on him doing more than that.

“I don’t know at this point,” Lovullo said. “This weekend, obviously, is out. But with him playing in some games on Monday and Tuesday, it could add a new dimension to his availability.”

Lineup

Friday’s game

Diamondbacks at Royals

When: 5:15 p.m

Where: Kauffman Stadium, Kansas City.

Pitchers: Diamondbacks RHP Zack Greinke (17-6, 3.18) vs. Royals RHP Ian Kennedy (4-13, 5.50).

TV/Radio: FSAZ/KTAR-AM (620), KSUN-AM (1400).

Greinke last pitched against the Marlins on Sept. 22, giving up eight runs in four innings. He allowed three home runs, two to LF Marcell Ozuna, one to 1B Justin Bour. … This will be a homecoming of sorts for Greinke, who was drafted sixth overall by the Royals in 2002 and spent his first seven seasons in the majors in Kansas City. … Kennedy has had a rough year, probably his worst since 2013, the year the Diamondbacks traded him to San Diego. … He gave up five runs in 5 1/3 innings on Sunday against the White Sox, and has posted a 7.48 ERA in his past 12 starts taking to July 21. … He has allowed 33 home runs, tying a career high.

Royals update: The Royals made a hard charge back into playoff contention prior to the trade deadline, but they’ve gone just 23-32 since July 31 to fall out of both the AL Central and the wild card race. The Royals have been below average with both pitching and offensive production. Their staff has a 4.60 ERA, ranking ninth in the American League, and their lineup has posted just a .733 OPS (on-base-plus-slugging), third-worst in the league. They’ve drawn the fewest walks and are fifth-to-last in home runs. 1B Eric Hosmer, an impending free agent, is hitting .319 with 24 homers and a team-best .881 OPS. 3B Mike Moustakas has a club-record 38 home runs. C Salvador Perez has a career-high 27 homers. CF Lorenzo Cain, another soon-to-be free agent, is hitting .300 with 25 steals and an .806 OPS.
