The annual Season for Sharing campaign benefits people in need across Arizona.

Each year, Season for Sharing reaches out to ask for help for our neighbors in need.

And for 24 years, readers of The Arizona Republic and azcentral have come through. During last year’s campaign alone, we raised and gave away an amazing $2.4 million in grants to 159 non-profits around the state. Thank you.

Those donations went to places like A New Leaf, where women and children who are escaping domestic violence situations get food, clothing and shelter.

And to the Desert Southwest Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association to help caregivers coping with that disease’s progression.

And to Treasures 4 Teachers, which provides supplies to entire schools attended by low-income kids who might otherwise be left behind.

You’ll read more about the agencies you helped — and the lives you changed — in articles we’ll publish during the nine weeks of our fundraising campaign. Throughout the year, however, The Republic reports the heartbreaking stories of children who struggle to learn because they are hungry. We document the dedication and stress of being a foster parent.

We believe strongly that our role is more than documenting our communities’ challenges. It is our responsibility to be part of solutions.

Season for Sharing helps with that mission.

Over the years, more than $60 million has been raised to aid domestic-violence victims, boost education, support children and families and help older adults thrive. Because The Republic pays all administrative cost, 100 percent of that money went to local non-profits.

We are only successful, however, because of you.

As president of The Republic and, I am humbled and honored to be part of this incredible community effort and thank you for your support. As an added incentive, we are matching donations 50 cents on the dollar until the campaign reaches $600,000. Matching funds are also provided by The Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust and the Gannett Foundation.

Ultimately, your donation is more than money. It provides independence, hope and opportunities.

Thank you, and may you have a blessed holiday season.
