Tomas out; Rodney availability unknown

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo met with reporters before today’s series finale against the Rockies at Chase Field and here are some of the highlights:

*RHP Fernando Rodney, who threw 34 pitches Saturday night during his second blown save in as many chances, was on the field doing his throwing program and Lovullo said he wasn’t able to meet with his closer yet about his availability should Arizona need a closer in the ninth inning today.

“We will follow up with him once we get some feedback from him and see how he feels,” Lovullo said.

*Lovullo also wasn’t ready to name his starting pitcher for Thursday’s game at the Nationals. The Diamondbacks need a fifth arm now that Shelby Miller has been moved to the 60-day disabled list and is getting ready to undergo Tommy John surgery.

Lovullo did say, however, that Archie Bradley is not a candidate to move into the starting rotation. The right-hander will remain in the bullpen for now, he said.

“The way we look at it is he’s been pretty dominant in the bullpen and we just felt like that’s where he’s shown a comfort,” Lovullo said, “so for right now, we want to continue with that and allow him to continue to be as dominant as he has been. It made a lot of sense for me.”

LHP Anthony Banda (2-1, 4.94) pitched well Saturday night for Triple-A Reno and could be a candidate for promotion this week.

“We have a lot of great candidates and that’s the strength of our system, that’s the strength of our player development,” Lovullo said.

*LF Yasmany Tomas is out of the starting lineup today as Lovullo is giving some of his bench players a chance to play (Daniel Descalso is starting in left, Jeremy Hazelbacker is starting in center, Nick Ahmed is starting at short). Tomas, however, has been raking lately after an ice-cold spring.

The Cuban slugger is hitting .310 in his last 11 games with four home runs and 15 RBIs. In his last 12 home games, he is batting .379 with three homers and 16 RBIs.
