Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton wants to name Terminal 3 at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport for Arizona Sen. John McCain.

“Senator McCain has given so much of himself to our country, to Arizona and to Phoenix. Giving something back to an American hero, a former naval aviator and a 30-year member of the U.S. Senate is the least we can do,” Stanton said in a statement Thursday.

The move requires the approval of the Phoenix City Council and McCain. Stanton said the proposal will go before the City Council on Nov. 29 and then be forwarded to McCain’s office for “full consideration.”

Terminal 3, home to Delta, Frontier and other carriers, is in the midst of a $590 million makeover that will be completed in 2020. Terminal 2 airlines will move into it at that time and Terminal 2 will be razed.

Sky Harbor’s busiest terminal, Terminal 4, is named for a famous Arizona senator. It was christened the Barry M. Goldwater Terminal when it opened in 1990.

Travelers generally refer to Sky Harbor’s terminals by the numbers.
