The anniversary of 9/11 is recognized as a National Day of Service and Remembrance to honor victims of the tragedy by helping others.
Several Arizona nonprofits are organizing volunteer opportunities to recognize the day. Among them: HandsOn Greater Phoenix, which is taking part in a national meal-packing event being coordinated in 10 cities nationwide.
The effort is organized by 9/11 Day, a nonprofit organization created in 2002 to honor 9/11 victims. This year, organizers are also paying tribute to those who died of COVID-19, first responders and healthcare workers.
Plans are for 2.5 million meals to be packed nationally.
HandsOn’s goal is to pack 200,000 meals for Arizona families, said Michaela Barnhart, the group’s volunteer manager. It is a reminder of the sense of connection and togetherness the country experienced right after 9/11, Barnhart said.
