USC was picked to win the Pac-12 football title in the annual preseason media poll.

The 52 writers surveyed picked defending Pac-12 champion Washington to win the North Division, but a majority of the voters (28) said the Trojans would take home the Pac-12 title this season.

Arizona State and the University of Arizona were picked to finish fifth and sixth in the South Division, with ASU getting 109 points and Arizona getting 61 in the poll.

PICKING THE PAC-12: Jeff Metcalfe’s preseason football media poll

USC and Washington both received 49 first-place votes; no other school received more than one. ASU and Arizona were among four schools in the conference- along with Oregon State and Cal- that received no first-place votes.

Some food for thought from the Pac-12 on the media’s accuracy of late.

The media has correctly selected the Conference Champion in 29 of 56 previous polls, but only twice in the last 10 polls. Following are the results of the preseason media poll (points 6-5-4-3-2-1, first-place votes in parentheses)

South Division (first-place votes) | points

  1. USC (49) | 309
  2. Utah (1) | 220
  3. UCLA (1) | 209
  4. Colorado (1) | 182
  5. ASU |109
  6. Arizona | 61

North Division (first-place votes) | points

  1. Washington (49) | 309
  2. Stanford (1) | 247
  3. Washington State (1) | 206
  4. Oregon (1) | 163
  5. Oregon State | 101
  6. California | 64
