The United Food Bank in Mesa lost about 21,650 pounds of frozen food after a compressor broke in the main freezer of its warehouse and transportation center on Monday, the agency said.

The food lost was about three weeks worth of meals for residents in need of assistance, the Food Bank said in a news release.

Freezer repairs will cost more than $10,000, an amount that normally would pay for about 40,000 meals, officials said.

The United Food Bank is asking for monetary donations as well as food donations to help offset the losses.

Information can be found online at unitedfoodbank.org.

The United Food Bank is a non-profit organization that is connected with agencies in eastern Maricopa County, Gila and Pinal counties, and southern Apache and Navajo counties to serve food to those in need. The Mesa-based agency distributed 27.7 million pounds of food to Arizonans in 2016.
