ASU: The Sun Devils (11-12, 1-5 Pac-12) rallied from a 4-0 deficit Tuesday for a 5-4 home win over UNLV on Barry Bonds night. Tyler Williams hit a two-run homer in the sixth that stood up as the game-winner thanks to Connor Higgins’ 4 2/3 innings of hitless relief pitching. Freshman Carter Aldrete played shortstop and could remain there if he holds up defensively. “He may not have as good range of Jeremy (McCuin), but we’re losing games because we’re not taking care of the baseball,” coach Tracy Smith said. “We’re not making the routine play if any play is routine. He’s been the most steady from the start of the season until now. In the field, you need that at the most critical position. We don’t care about the great play up the middle. We need the guy who’s going to field the ground ball. When a ground ball is hit in the direction of Carter, I’m not wondering if we’re going to make the play. I know we’re going to make the play.” ASU also is settling down somewhat in the bullpen with roles for Eder Ervies, Jake Godfrey, Higgins, Reagan Todd and Ryan Hingst.
