Westbound U.S. 60 was closed Tuesday morning in the East Valley for a fatal crash investigation.

A pedestrian died after being struck by several cars on U.S. 60 near Val Vista Drive in Mesa early Tuesday, officials said.

According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, multiple cars hit a man who had wandered onto the highway just after 3 a.m.

His body was found directly under the bridge on the side of the freeway.

The crash forced the closure of westbound U.S. 60 at the Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway, and transportation officials advise taking alternate routes due to traffic building in the area.

The crash is under investigation.
