Two people were killed in a traffic crash that forced the closure of part of Southern Avenue in Tempe on Monday night, police said.

The two-vehicle crash involving a sedan and a commercial-sized van occurred on Southern Avenue near Hardy Drive about 8 p.m., police said.

“The investigation is still fluid, but we do know that (the) accident was fatal for two subjects and a third is in serious condition,” Tempe police Sgt. Ron Elcock said.

Three people were trapped and had to be extricated from one of the vehicles, Tempe fire officials said.

Elcock said the two people killed were pronounced dead at the scene. The victims have not yet been identified, and their ages have not been disclosed.

Tempe police said impairment may have been a factor in the crash, but it has not yet been confirmed.

Southern Avenue was closed to traffic between Hardy and Priest drives Monday night while police investigated.
