Tucson police have identified a man shot and killed by an officer Wednesday afternoon as 35-year-old Charles Robert Arviso.

Officers just before 3:30 p.m. responded to a shooting near Valencia and Midvale Park roads where a man said he was confronted by an armed man in the parking, the Tucson Police Department said in a Facebook post on Thursday. The armed man was later identified by police as Arviso.

Arviso fired his gun toward the man, hitting his car, and then fled, the department said.

During a search of the area, police were flagged down by another man who claimed Arviso also pointed a gun at him before again fleeing toward the Santa Cruz riverbed, according to the department.

As officers continued searching for Arviso, they heard two shots fired in their direction, the department said. They then saw Arviso in the riverbed and commanded him to drop his weapon, the department said.

He instead pointed the gun in their direction, prompting one of the officers at the scene to shoot Arviso near Valencia Road and Calle Santa Cruz, according to the department. He was declared dead at the scene.

The shooting was being investigated by the department’s violent crimes and office of professional standards units.

No officers or members of the public were injured during the incident.
