A 72-year-old Tucson man was sentenced to prison for threatening members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, federal officials said.

Richard Corrie Beals was sentenced to 13 months and one day in prison and fined $5,000, after a jury convicted him for sending a communication that contained a threat to kidnap or injure, said the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Tucson.

Evidence at the trial showed that Beals has sent several threatening and harassing communications over an extended time period, officials said.

Beals sent the communications to various officials and private citizens in Salt Lake City, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.

Most of the threats were directed to members of the Mormon church, officials said.

Beal will be supervised for three years after being release from prison, said the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Tucson.

His terms of release also include a “stay-away” order and no contact with of the victims and any Mormon facilities and temples.
