A train and car collided at a west Phoenix intersection Tuesday afternoon, Phoenix police said.

Police tweeted just before 3 p.m. that the intersection near 43rd Avenue and Camelback Road had been shut down following the collision.

The occupants of the vehicle were taken to a hospital as a precaution, police spokesman Sgt. Vince Lewis said.

Lewis said the intersection probably would be closed through the evening rush hour, and he encouraged motorists to find alternative routes.

The Arizona Corporation Commission tweeted that its railroad safety inspectors were heading to the scene as part of the investigation.

It was unclear how the incident occurred.

An investigation is ongoing.
