Chris Owings is eligible to return from the disabled list a week from Friday, but the Diamondbacks infielder could be up against the clock in hopes of being ready to come back from a broken right middle finger.

“He’s going to get re-checked on Friday, and I think they just want to progress slowly,” manager Torey Lovullo said. “They’re right at that point where they want to ramp it up, but I think Dr. (Don) Sheridan decided that he wanted to just take it easy.”

If Owings is only cleared on Friday to increase his activity – all he has done at this point is take dry swings – it would leave him only one week to get ready for the Diamondbacks’ season-ending series in Kansas City, which was when he was hoping to come off the disabled list.

“I think the timing of it could be a little bit challenging,” Lovullo said. “He’s been doing everything he possibly can to make this happen as quickly as possible. A crazy thing can happen where you get six, 10 or 12 at-bats, get locked in – anything is possible.”

Owings was an important part of the Diamondbacks’ success early in the season, bouncing between shortstop, right field and second base and hitting throughout the lineup for Lovullo. He broke the finger when he was hit by a pitch on July 30 in St. Louis.

Even if Owings’ finger doesn’t progress to the point where he can be a factor at the plate, he could provide value for the Diamondbacks on the bases, though Lovullo said he hasn’t yet considered that possibility.

“A pinch-runner, somebody that can steal some bases, is extremely valuable,” Lovullo said. “I don’t think we’ve gotten there yet. We haven’t quite had those types of conversations.”

Peralta out of D-Backs’ lineup

David Peralta, who departed Monday night’s game in the sixth inning with right quad tightness, was out of the lineup on Tuesday, though he and manager Torey Lovullo downplayed the severity of the injury.

“It just sounded the best for me to give him the day off and let him recover a little bit,” Lovullo said.

Part of his reasoning, Lovullo acknowledged, was to get another right-handed bat in the lineup against Padres lefty Travis Wood, who has struggled against righties (.325 average) this season.

Lovullo said Peralta is available off the bench.

He gave up just one run in six innings against the Twins in his most recent outing. … He has a 2.44 ERA in his past 10 starts, though he still appears to have trouble throwing strikes at times, with 28 walks in 59 innings in that stretch. … He faced the Diamondbacks on June 6 in his third career start and was roughed up, giving up seven earned runs in three-plus innings.
