Do you know what to do if you’re in an accident?
A fatal collision involving two semitrucks and other vehicles this afternoon closed the westbound lanes of Interstate 10 near Marana, causing a 10-mile backup and lengthy delays for motorists traveling toward Phoenix, officials said.
The Arizona Department of Transportation did not know how long westbound I-10 would remain closed and advised drivers to seek out an alternative route.
Motorists were detoured to frontage roads toward Red Rock along I-10, leading to the 10-mile backup.
ADOT advised drivers to turn back if they were heading toward the exit at mile post 236.
The Arizona Department of Public Safety said a semitruck hauling a load of produce eastbound on I-10 collided this afternoon with an SUV being towed by a pickup. The SUV disconnected from the pickup and rolled over, and the pickup veered off road and rolled over.
The semitruck crossed the median and collided with another semitruck traveling westbound on I-10. The first truck’s trailer landed on the cab of the westbound semitruck, killing the westbound truck’s driver.
The driver of the first commercial vehicle was transported to a hospital with injuries. The driver of the pickup pulling the SUV was uninjured.
The collision prompted lengthy delays for motorists. Some turned to social media to describe the delays.
The collision temporarily closed eastbound lanes, which have since reopened. ADOT did not provide an estimate on when the westbound lanes would reopen.
