Arizona State football coach Todd Graham continued to rave about what his team gained from a week at Camp Tontozona on Monday, when the Sun Devils were back on the field in Tempe to start their third week of preseason.

“I asked our coaches to tell me what that experience was like for you,” said Graham, particularly for his five new assistants. “About every one of our coaches that are new and even the ones that have been here said that was the best week in their coaching career as far as being a part of something special.

“You’ve got to build upon that. This team has a chemistry and closeness that’s really positive. I was very encouraged by the improvement we’ve made defensively. I loved how our guys competed all week, I loved the attitude. I like this team, I like their tenacity, I like their focus. We’ve gotten better every day.”

First-year offensive coordinator Billy Napier said, “It was a very positive experience for our players and almost a sense of respect. You’re making the drive up there and you drive through the gates and you start thinking about the players and coaches that have come before you. Then you’re sitting at dinner the first night and coach Kush’s son (Danny) speaks to the entire team and talks about his vision for Camp T and what that experience meant then and what it can mean to our team now.

“There’s tremendous history and tradition there and it’s great for this generation of kids to have an opportunity to go there where they’re forced to get to know their teammates.”

Offensive line work continues

Graham said there were too many sacks and negative plays during the scrimmage Saturday with a large number of bad snaps in part due to the use of multiple centers.

A.J. McCollum was at first team center Monday with Cade Cote on the second team. Others on the first team offensive line coming out of camp were Cohl Cabral (left tackle), Sam Jones (left guard), Steve Miller (right guard) and Quinn Bailey (right tackle).

Napier said that offensive line roles will be more defined going forward as decisions are made on who plays best next to each other. If McCollum holds the starting center job, it won’t be a surprise if the current first team line is the same one for the season opener Aug. 31.

Running backs standing out

Graham said freshman running back Trelon Smith “had an unbelievable day” Monday, joining freshman RB Eno Benjamin in the high praise category for the first two weeks of preseason.

“We’ve got some good problems with that group,” including seniors Kalen Ballage and Demario Richard and sophomore Nick Ralston.

Napier said history tells you that depth is needed at running back and that planning for attrition this season includes Benjamin and perhaps Smith playing rather than redshirting. “They’re quality depth and give a spark,” he said. “Eno is a capable guy you can count on with maturity and intelligence. He’s further along than a typical freshman.”

Players nursing injuries

After a week at Camp Tontozona, a number of players were out or limited with apparently minor injuries, most carrying over from camp.

Those include:

  • DB Langston Frederick
  • DL Jordan Hoyt
  • LB A.J. Latu
  • RB Nick Ralston
  • OL Corey Stephens
  • TE Mark Walton
  • WR Curtis Hodges
  • OL Tyson Rising
  • WR Ryan Jenkins

Safety Das Tautalatasi lined up with the first team defense at the start of a tempo period then left and was replaced by Marcus Ball.

Players wearing green non-contact jerseys were QB Brady White, DB Demonte King, DB Evan Fields, DL Jalen Bates and OL Corey Smith.

Coming up

The Sun Devils practice Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday this week before taking Friday off. On Saturday night, there will be a closed scrimmage at 7:30 p.m., same time as kickoff for the opener vs. New Mexico State.

ASU classes begins Aug. 17 so football still has more than a week to practice before breaking camp and beginning its regular weekly schedule.

The annual Tempe Chamber of Commerce football luncheon is coming up Aug. 18.
