The Phoenix Zoo was forced to close on Friday because of damage caused by storms that rolled through the Valley late Thursday afternoon.
Zoo officials, in a statement released Thursday, said multiple trees were downed at the zoo, along with two tents that were destroyed.
In addition, flooding left debris on several zoo trails.
All animals were safe and accounted for, Phoenix Zoo officials said.
The damaged tents included one located near the zoo’s lakeside area and another near the popular Stingray Bay exhibit.
The zoo said it hopes to reopen by Saturday.
The storms that hit the Valley on Thursday struck areas of east Phoenix and Tempe particularly hard. The zoo is located in Papago Park near the Phoenix-Tempe border.
A rain gauge near Priest Drive and the Salt River south of the zoo recorded nearly 1.7 inches of rainfall during the storm.
