The Spencer Rattler hype is growing for Oklahoma football, and he hasn’t even been named the team’s starting quarterback.
Rattler, a touted 5-star recruit out of Phoenix Pinnacle High, is expected to do big things in Lincoln Riley’s offense next season after playing sparingly behind Jalen Hurts on the Sooners last season.
Tanner Mordecai was Oklahoma’s No. 2 quarterback last season, but according to the writers below, Rattler is expected to take over the reins in Norman in 2020.
He’s also expected to shine as the Sooners quarterback.

Check out what college football writers are saying about Rattler and the Sooners now:
USA TODAY Sports: Spencer Rattler will be given every opportunity to start for Sooners
Paul Myerberg writes: “The next starting quarterback at Oklahoma will be redshirt freshman Spencer Rattler, barring injury or a major upset. He’ll be given every opportunity to nail down the starting job after playing in three games during his first year on campus, including some garbage time in the Peach Bowl loss to LSU. It’s understandable that Rattler’s ascension will draw headlines — he’s preceded under center at OU by Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray and Jalen Hurts. But the bigger issue for OU is improving a defense that lived a nightmare in the 63-28 loss in the national semifinals.”
Dallas Morning News: Spencer Rattler favorite to land starting quarterback job
Spenser Davis writes: “Who will win the job? If you ask Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley, he’ll say the Sooners will be going through another quarterback competition this offseason between Rattler, Mordecai and — to a lesser extent, given his age — Chandler Morris. If you ask an Oklahoma fan about the Sooners’ quarterback situation in 2020, they’re probably expecting to see Rattler — the crown jewel of OU’s 2019 recruiting class — be named the starter in short order. Given Rattler’s playing time at the end of the Peach Bowl against LSU, it may be a matter of “when” and not “if” he’s named the starter in Norman.”

Fansided: As QB Spencer Rattler goes, so will the Sooners in 2020
Chip Rouse writes: “The starting job is set, and it belongs to sophomore-to-be Spencer Rattler. This is not meant as a put-down to Tanner Mordecai, the redshirt freshman who was listed as No. 2 on the depth chart and backup to Jalen Hurts for most of last season. It’s simply a matter of fact. Rattler spent his freshman season at OU learning the system and becoming acclimated to major college football. He saw action in only three games, throwing a total of 11 passes and completing seven for 81 yards and running with the ball three times for 23 yards. Among the three games in which Rattler appeared was against eventual national champion LSU in the last season’s College Football Playoff.”
The Athletic: Spencer Rattler has it all
Jason Kersey writes: “Much of (his) ultimate success will come down to the way he handles himself. The talent is there; his ceiling is high. He has an elite, powerful arm. He is accurate. He is athletic enough to make plays with his legs. He seems to have it all.”
Stormininnorman.com: Spencer Rattler will be QB at Oklahoma, barring injury
Chip Rouse writes: “For the fourth time in as many seasons, Oklahoma will introduce a new starting quarterback when the 2020 season opens on Sept. 5. Spencer Rattler, the No. 1 dual-threat quarterback in the 2019 national recruiting class will be the next man up at that position for Riley and the Sooners. A natural passer with a quick release, Rattler was the first high school quarterback in the state of Arizona to exceed 11,000 yards passing in his career. He has good mobility and, like the Sooner QBs who preceded him, has the ability to extend plays. He has good speed and elusiveness but, right at six feet and a shade under 200 pounds, won’t be counted on to run the ball as much as Hurts.”

Bleacher Report: Spencer Rattler will be key for Oklahoma in 2020
Joel Reuter writes: “Redshirt freshman and former 5-star recruit Spencer Rattler is the early favorite to replace Jalen Hurts under center, and he will be instrumental to the team’s success.”
247 Sports: Sooners won’t miss a beat with Spencer Rattler under center
Brad Crawford writes: “All three of Lincoln Riley’s quarterbacks at Oklahoma have been at least Heisman Trophy finalists since he took over following Bob Stoops’ resignation in 2017. Baker Mayfield (2017) and Kyler Murray (2018) won the award, while Jalen Hurts finished second following his transfer from Alabama. Rattler was the only quarterback 247Sports rated as a five-star in the class of 2019, and he played sparingly last season, allowing him to maintain his redshirt status. The Sooners offense isn’t expected to miss a beat with Rattler back there, who is arguably a more talented passer than Hurts.”
Heisman odds
Spencer Rattler has not even been named the starting quarterback at Oklahoma, but there are already Heisman Trophy odds out for him next season.
And they are very high on the former Phoenix Pinnacle standout.
Rattler was third on the list of odds for the award in Westgate SuperBook’s initial odds at 12-1.
USA TODAY Sports’ Paul Myerberg wrote of Rattler’s chances: “Assuming Rattler ascends to the starting job as Hurts’ successor, which seems likely barring Lincoln Riley again dipping into the transfer pool. If he’s the pick, Rattler is a strong contender based on recent history: Oklahoma’s last three starters have been Heisman finalists, with Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray taking the trophy home.”
