Why did Josh Jackson not work out for Boston?

There’s been one constant in this season of change for the Phoenix Suns.

They can’t find a way to get off to good starts. Nine times this season they’ve trailed after the first quarter and their record in those games, after Wednesday’s 126-115 loss to the Miami Heat?

Try 1-8.

The Suns now have lost four straight games under interim coach Jay Triano and each game has followed a familiar pattern. Fall behind, expend a lot of energy trying to rally and then slowly walk off the court, the scoreboard a garish reminder of what just occurred.

The poor first quarters actually go back five games, to Phoenix’s 122-116 victory over Washington on Nov. 1. In that game, Phoenix trailed by 17 points after the first quarter. Since then, it’s been a 13-point deficit to the Knicks, an eight-point deficit to the Spurs, a nine-point deficit to the Nets and a nine-point deficit to the Heat.

On Wednesday, the Suns never led and couldn’t get closer than six points in the final three quarters.

“It’s hard to play catch-up for sure,” Triano said. “I think teams are ramped up at first and maybe they take their foot off the gas and we’re able to climb back in, but first quarters haven’t been very good. We can’t give up 36 and 33 (points) the first half and be down that many points. You can’t put yourself in a hole like that.”

Triano wasn’t ready to discuss any potential lineup changes after the game, saying, “I’m not thinking like that. I don’t think I can say that guy going into the starting lineup is going to change this whole thing and turn things around for us. If I thought that I would have done it by now.”

The Suns don’t seem to have one answer for their first-quarter troubles. Point guard Mike James thinks Phoenix might be too impatient offensively. Forward Jared Dudley believes teams aren’t taking the Suns for granted like they might have earlier this season. Devin Booker simply said, “Just be ready to play. Just go out there and compete from the beginning.”

It didn’t help Wednesday that Phoenix was without center Tyson Chandler (back spasms). Then, when Alex Len picked up two fouls in the first five minutes Miami center Hassan Whiteside was able to feast on smaller defenders like Marquese Chriss and Dragan Bender, finishing with 23 points, 10 rebounds and four blocked shots. Chandler’s absence also was felt on the boards; the Suns were outrebounded 53-34.

“Alex Len picks up two quick fouls and Tyson’s not able to play so we don’t really have a big guy around the rim to stop him (Whiteside),” Triano said.

Phoenix also was tortured by an old friend. Miami point guard Goran Dragic had 29 points, nine rebounds and four assists in 38 minutes.

“Those rims are friendly,” Dragic said. “I’ve played a lot of games here. It definitely helps. You feel comfortable.”

Triano said before the game that Phoenix needed to make things easier for Booker on the offensive end and Booker was brilliant, with 30 points, six assists and zero turnovers. But those numbers don’t mean much when Phoenix allowed Miami to score the most points it has all season and shoot a season-high 53.1 percent from the field.

“The offense hasn’t been the problem,” Dudley said. “Defensively, the reason why we went on that winning streak, guys defensively got after it and held teams under their normal averages.”

One area that plagued Phoenix last season – committing too many fouls – has again become an issue. Phoenix was second-to-last in the league in fouls per game (24.3) coming into Wednesday’s contest, and it was whistled for 29 fouls against the Heat, sending Miami to the line 35 times.

Chriss fouled out in 25 minutes – in part because he was trying to cover the bigger Whiteside – and Len picked up a needless fourth foul midway through the third quarter when he tried to go over the back of the 7-foot Whiteside for an offensive rebound. He played just 19 minutes on a night the Suns didn’t have Chandler.

“It’s figuring out when and how to use them and when not to use them,” Triano said. “Trying to be tenacious defensively but not silly with how we use our fouls. But that’s part of our growth process.”
