Larry Fitzgerald has signed a one-year extension with the Cardinals, which resolved one important issue: If Fitzgerald plays in 2018, it will be with Arizona.

But the new deal prompted several other questions.

1. Does this mean Fitzgerald is definitely playing in 2018?

No. We don’t know that yet. Fitzgerald declined to comment about his new deal on Thursday night, and he generally dislikes talking about himself and hates discussing his money. Chances are, he’s not going to be available to reporters until after Sunday’s game in Houston.

A new contract suggests Fitzgerald has decided to play a 15th season, but until we hear or read the words “I’m coming back” from Fitzgerald, we shouldn’t assume that.

The Cardinals organization, however, thinks Fitzgerald will play in 2018.

“Everybody is happy for him,” coach Bruce Arians said. “Hope he comes back and catches 100 more.”

Fitzgerald did not specifically tell Arians he was returning.

“I just said, ‘Congrats,’ and that was about it,” Arians said.

Fitzgerald was not available for comment on Friday and did not return messages.

It’s possible. Maybe Fitzgerald has told those two that he plans to continue playing in 2018. If so, that could be only a positive influence on Palmer and Arians returning, too.

It’s also possible that Fitzgerald has told Palmer and Arians nothing about his plans for 2018, maybe because Fitzgerald doesn’t know what he’s doing beyond this season.

Arians said Fitzgerald’s decision regarding 2018 won’t impact his.

“That’s totally different,” he said. “They’re separate entities.”

But, he was asked, it doesn’t hurt?

“No,” he said, smiling.

3. So, wait. What exactly did this one-year extension accomplish?

It assures the Cardinals that if Fitzgerald plays in 2018, it will be for them. His contract was up at the end of the season, so Fitzgerald could have moved on to chase the one thing his career lacks: a Super Bowl ring.

The extension gives the team peace of mind that Fitzgerald isn’t going to play anywhere else. The deal also gives the team positive publicity in the middle of a disappointing season.

“It was discouraging when someone said to me, ‘Do you think Fitz is going to retire this year?’ ” running back Adrian Peterson said. “I would hate to see my friend go so that’s positive news. You look at him and you know he’s a Hall of Famer.”

4. Why does this deal have a no-trade clause?

Fitzgerald’s current one does, too. The clause really isn’t needed because there is no way the Cardinals would trade the most popular player in franchise history. Team President Michael Bidwill would never approve it. I doubt whether Bidwill would approve even if Fitzgerald one day asked for the clause to be waived.

5. How much will Fitzgerald make?

The salary is $11 million, the same amount Fitzgerald made in each of the past two seasons. There is an opportunity for him to earn $1 million more by meeting certain incentives.

6. What’s the cap implication?

The Cardinals were going to take a cap charge of $4.85 million next year due to previous bonuses paid to Fitzgerald. Add that to his salary, and his cap number should be around $15.85 million in 2018 – if he plays. That’s the same as it was in 2016 and ’17. The salary cap has increased substantially in that time, so in layman’s terms, Fitzgerald isn’t receiving a cost-of-living increase.
