Scottsdale police on Thursday identified a man fatally shot by officers the day before as 61-year-old Chris A. Mellon. 

The shooting on Nov. 11 occurred at a home near Pinnacle Peak and Dobson roads where people reported a woman’s husband was “acting erratically,” armed with a gun and threatening his family, according to police spokesperson Sgt. Ben Hoster.

Officers at the scene learned the woman was not home, however, four family members were inside and eventually removed by police.

Mellon about an hour later was seen by officers on the roof of the home, armed with a gun and pointing it at police, according to Hoster.

Two officers shot and killed Mellon, Hoster said. No one else was injured during the incident.

Police said the couple at the home had been experiencing “domestic problems.” Mellon was arrested on Dec. 1, 2018, on suspicion of domestic violence and disorderly conduct charges, Hoster said Thursday.

Law enforcement have shot at least 40 other people in Maricopa County this year, according to data from the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office.
