Allison Schmitt of Sun Devil Swimming finished sixth in the women’s 100-meter freestyle Friday at the U.S. Olympic Swim Trials.

Schmitt already qualified for her fourth Olympics by finishing second in the 200 free in Omaha, Nebraska. She will be a candidate for the 4×100 free and 4×200 free relays off her finishes in those events.

Hali Flickinger, already qualified for the Tokyo Olympics, July 23-Aug. 8, in two individual events, advanced to the 200 backstroke final. She was eighth in the semifinals in 2:09.61, just making the cut to the final.

In the women’s 800 freestyle, Sierra Schmidt, training unattached in Arizona, was seventh in prelims in 8:29.93 to make the final.

Leah Smith of Tucson missed out on her last chance for second Olympics, finishing 10th in the 800 free prelims in 8:36.10. Arizona State’s Emma Nordin was 14th (8:39.48).

Hali Flickinger of Sun Devil Swimming wins 200 butterfly at Olympic Trials

Hali Flickinger of Sun Devil Swimming won the 200-meter butterfly Thursday at the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials.

Flickinger lowered her U.S. Open record, set in 2018, by swimming 2:05.85 in Omaha, Nebraska.

The 26-year-old qualified for her second individual event at the Tokyo Olympics, July 23-Aug. 8. Earlier, she was second in the 400 IM.

Arizona State’s Lindsay Looney was fourth in the 200 butterfly final in 2:08.40.

Allison Schmitt of Sun Devil Swimming made it through to the women’s 100 freestyle final when 2016 Olympic gold medalist Simone Manuel did not.

Schmitt, who qualified for her fourth Olympics on Wednesday in the 200 free, was sixth in 100 free semifinals in 54.08. Manuel was ninth in 54.17, missing out on the eight-woman final.

In the men’s 200 breaststroke final, 2016 Olympian Kevin Cordes, who swam collegiately at Arizona, was fourth in 2:10.06. He finished behind Nic Fink, Andrew Wilson and Will Licon.

ASU’s Grant House was ninth in the men’s 200 IM semifinals in 1:59.68, just missing out on the final.

Allison Schmitt of Sun Devil Swimming qualifies for fourth Olympics

Allison Schmitt of Sun Devil Swimming qualified for her fourth Olympics on Wednesday, finishing second behind Katie Ledecky in the 200-meter freestyle at the U.S. Olympic Trials.

Schmitt, 31, is an eight-time Olympic medalist combined from the 2008, 2012 and 2016 Olympics. She has trained in Arizona with Arizona State coach Bob Bowman since before the 2016 Olympics.

In the trials final at Omaha, Nebraska, Ledecky won in 1:55.11 followed by Schmitt in 1:56.79, out-touching Paige Madden (1:56.80). Leah Smith of Tucson was eighth in 1:58.13.

Schmitt won the 200 free and was 400 free silver medalist at the 2012 Olympics. Her other Olympic medals are for relays including two in Rio.

The two top four finishers in the 200 free automatically qualify for the Tokyo Olympics, July 23-Aug. 8, for relay roles with fifth- and sixth-place finishers also under consideration for the team.

Also Wednesday, Haley Flickinger of Sun Devil Swimming and ASU’s Lindsay Looney advanced to the women’s 200 butterfly final.

Flickinger, already qualified for Tokyo in the 400 IM, was fastest in the semifinals in 2:06.73 with Looney in eighth (2:09.56).

Arizona’s Brooks Fail was eighth in the men’s 200 butterfly final (1:57.53).

Former UA All-America Kevin Cordes advanced to the men’s 200 breaststroke final, finishing third fastest in the semifinals (2:09.31).

Sierra Schmidt, training unattached in Arizona after her Michigan college career, was seventh in the women’s 1,500 free, also won by Ledecky. 

Matt Grevers of Tucson finishes sixth in 100 back at Olympic Swim Trials

Two-time Olympian Matt Grevers of Tucson was sixth in the men’s 100-meter backstroke at the U.S. Olympic Swim Trials in Omaha, Nebraska.

The 36-year-old will miss out on the Tokyo Olympics and likely finish his professional career with 33 medals in major international competition including six at the Olympics. He was the 2012 100 backstroke gold medalist.

Ryan Murphy won the 100 back in 52.33 seconds followed by Hunter Armstrong in 52.48. The 6-8 Grevers finished in 53.65 five years after finishing third at the 2016 trials, one place away from qualifying for the Rio Olympics.

Grevers chose to continue competing after 2016 and was second in the 100 back at the 2017 World Championships, ahead of world record holder Murphy.

In the women’s 200 free semifinals, Allison Schmitt of Sun Devil Swimming was fourth (1:57.73) and Leah Smith of Tucson Ford Dealers eighth (1:58.22) with both advancing to the final.

Katie Ledecky made the 200 free semifinals at 1:55.83 after finishing second, between Smith and Schmitt in the morning preliminaries.

The 31-year-old Schmitt is trying to make her fourth Olympics and second since moving to Arizona to train with ASU coach Bob Bowman. She is an eight-time Olympic medalist.

In the men’s 200 butterfly, Arizona’s Brooks Fail advanced to the final, finishing eighth in the semifinals (1:57.08). 

Leah Smith of Tucson finishes third in 400 free at Olympic Swim Trials

Leah Smith of Tucson barely missed out on qualifying for the Tokyo Olympics for a second consecutive day Monday.

World record holder Katie Ledecky won the women’s 400-meter freestyle easily as expected at the U.S. Swimming Trials in Omaha, Nebraska, in 4:01.27 followed by Paige Madden from the University of Virginia in 4:04.86.

Smith, who trains with Tucson Ford Dealers Aquatics, was third in 4:06.27, but only the top two finishers advance to the Tokyo Olympics, July 23-Aug. 8. She was a 400 free bronze medalist at the 2016 Rio Olympics and a gold medalist in the 4×200 relay.

On Sunday, Smith was fourth in the 400 IM final with Hali Flickinger of Sun Devil Swimming finishing second to qualify for her second Olympics.

Smith still is scheduled to compete in the 200, 800 and 1,500 freestyle.

Arizona State’s Emma Nordin took fifth in 4:08.49 and Sierra Schmidt, competing unattached and training in Arizona, was sixth in 4:09.11.

Also Monday, 36-year-old Matt Grevers of Tucson advanced to the men’s 100 backstroke final, taking sixth in the semifinals in 53.18. Grevers is a two-time Olympian and 2012 100 back gold medalist.

In the women’s 100 backstroke semifinals, Amy Bilquist of Scottsdale Aquatic Club was ninth in 1:00.26, just missing out on the finals. 

In the men’s 200 free semifinals, ASU’s Grant House was 11th in 1:47.28 and Julian Hill 16th in 1:48.83.

Hali Flickinger of Sun Devil Swimming qualifies for second Olympics

Hali Flickinger of Sun Devil Swimming qualified for her second Olympics on Sunday.

The 26-year-old was runner-up in the women’s 400-meter IM at the U.S. Olympic Swim Trials in Omaha, Nebraska.

Emma Weyant, 19, won in 4:33.81 followed by Flickinger at 4:33.96. They both advance to the Tokyo Olympics, July 23-Aug. 8.

Leah Smith of Tucson Ford Dealers Aquatics was fourth in 4:34.55.

Flickinger moved to Arizona to train with ASU coach Bob Bowman after the 2019 World Championships, where she was silver medalist in the 200 butterfly. She was seventh in the 200 fly at the 2016 Rio Olympics and will compete in that event later in the trials.

Also Sunday, the first day of wave II of the trials, former Arizona swimmer Chris Wieser and current Wildcat Brooks Fail were fourth and fifth in the men’s 400 freestyle final.

2016 Olympian Kevin Cordes, another former UA swimmer, qualified for the men’s 100 breaststroke final with a semifinal time of 59.33.
