All summer, Nolan Gorman’s messages have been sent high and deep.

From Marlins Park to Wrigley Field, the Phoenix Sandra Day O’Connor senior third baseball has won two national high school home run derbies.

Now, he can send one more message to Major League Baseball teams starting Sunday with a powerful display at the Area Code Games, which is pretty much an audition for high school seniors for next June’s MLB draft.

It runs from Sunday to Thursday in Long Beach, Calif. It is sponsored by Major League Baseball. Gorman joins 12 other Arizona high school players playing on the Reds team. Top seniors from across the country went through tryouts conducted by major league teams to be chosen for this showcase.

“I’m going to have fun this week,” said Gorman, a left-handed-hitting slugger who committed his sophomore year to the University of Arizona. “It will be the top players in the country and obviously a scouting event. But I’m not really looking at next year’s draft right now.”

Last month, Gorman became the second straight Arizona high school player to win the MLB All-Star Game High School Home Run Derby at Marlins Park in Miami. Last year, Chandler Hamilton first baseman Nick Brueser (now at Stanford) won the contest in San Diego.

Then, last week, Gorman won the Under Armour All-American Game home run derby in Chicago.

“It’s all about timing and getting your pitch to hit and hit it hard,” said Gorman, who is 6-foot-1, 205 pounds and hit 11 home runs last season for O’Connor.

Gorman says he is looking forward to playing for UA, but he is open to major league teams.

“As of now I’m going (to UA), but if something comes along, I’ll have to cross the bridge when it gets there,” he said.
