On to the next round

South Carolina and UCLA put the finishing touches on their respective routs, and Kentucky held on to eliminate scrappy Northern Kentucky to bring Friday’s action to an end. Looking ahead to Saturday, berths in the Sweet 16 will begin being punched starting at 12:10 p.m. ET with Notre Dame vs. West Virginia. No. 1 seeds Villanova (vs. Wisconsin, 2:40 p.m. ET, CBS) and Gonzaga (vs. Northwestern, 5:15 p.m. ET, CBS) are also in action.

Michigan State flips a switch

The Spartans beat Miami (Fla.), 78-58, to advance to face top-seeded Kansas on Sunday. But the real story of this game was how Michigan State’s freshmen responded after falling behind 19-8 midway through the first half. MSU finished the half on a 30-8 run to lead by 11 at halftime and never looked back. Nick Ward (19 points), Miles Bridges (18) and Joshua Langford (13), all freshmen, led the Spartans’ scoring attack.

Lonzo Ball doing it all in first NCAA tournament game

This really isn’t news. Ball will almost-assuredly be a lottery pick in the NBA draft this summer, and he’s proving it in UCLA’s opening game against Kent State.

Dayton falls victim to March’s madness against Wichita State

Is it really an upset if the team who won was favored by 6 points? That was the case when No. 10 Wichita State took on No. 7 Dayton Friday night. Those guys in Las Vegas sure know what they’re doing, as the Shockers won 64-58.

CBS roasts former Kansas Jayhawk Perry Ellis

There was a long-running joke in college hoops that Perry Ellis had been at Kansas for longer than four years. Even though Ellis is in the NBA’s D-League and no longer with the team, CBS couldn’t resist not making the joke.

Kansas guard Frank Mason lost his mind after teammate’s three-pointer

Tyler Self, a senior on the Jayhawk roster (and coach Bill Self’s son), got some playing time in the Jayhawks’ 100-62 win over UC Davis Friday night. He hit a three, and the bench – Frank Mason in particular – absolutely loved it.

Duke’s Jayson Tatum ends the first half with massive block at the rim

After Grayson Allen drilled a three to extend Duke’s 52-38 lead over Troy, Jeremy Hollimon tried to go coast-to-coast to get a bucket before the half. Jayson Tatum wasn’t having any of that.

NCAA issues statement on tournament site court repair

A court repair was needed in Greenville, a regional site for this year’s NCAA tournament. The NCAA sent the following statement to in regards to the issue at hand:

“During the first session of today’s NCAA tournament games in Greenville, a minor irregularity was discovered on one of the panels on the playing court. As is the case every year, our partners from Connor Sport Court are on site, and they quickly repaired the seam as soon as the North Carolina-Texas Southern game concluded. Once the repairs were made, players from Duke and Troy were given access to the court and each team had 46 minutes to warm up for tonight’s first game in the second session from Greenville. The safety of the student-athletes remain our top priority.”

No. 11 Rhode Island knocks off No. 6 Creighton for second upset of the day

With former Ram-great Lamar Odom watching, Rhode Island never trailed in their upset victory over Creighton Friday night. Freshman Jeff Dowtin led the way with 23 points.

No. 11 USC rallies back for second time, knocks out No. 6 SMU

The Trojans completed the first upset of the day on Friday, storming back from a double-digit deficit against the Mustangs.

Lamar Odom on scene for Rhode Island-Creighton

Rhode Island is making its first NCAA tournament appearance in 18 years, and Lamar Odom, one of its most famous alums, is there to watch. Odom, who played for Rhode Island in 1998-98, hit a three-pointer against Temple to give the school its first Atlantic-10 Tournament championship. The former NBA star, who has struggled with substance abuse and marital problems with Khloé Kardashian, looked healthy and talked to USA TODAY Sports about where he is in life.

SMU’s Semi Ojeleye throws down early dunk of the tournament

Early in the second half, the No. 6 Mustangs were clinging to a 40-36 lead against No. 11 USC when Semi Ojeleye threw down a vicious put-back dunk in-between two defenders.

Arkansas edges Seton Hall in 8-9 game

The No. 8 Razorbacks trailed by eight with less than nine minutes left, but rallied to beat Seton Hall 77-71. Arkansas will play the winner of North Carolina and Texas Southern.

Meaningless shot not so meaningless for bettors

Down four points, Oklahoma State guard Jawun Evans hit a three-pointer at the buzzer against Michigan. While inconsequential in the final score (92-91 Wolverines), it great news for those who put money on the Cowboys. The Wolverines entered the game as a 2.5-point favorite, meaning the 10th-seeded Cowboys covered the spread.

Block of the year?

Arkansas’ Moses Kingsley denied Seton Hall’s Desi Rodriguez at the rim:

Baylor runs away from New Mexico State

The No. 14 Aggies led third-seeded Baylor at halftime but were blown out in the second half, losing 91-73 against the Bears.

Michigan moves on

The Wolverines were 16-for-29 on three-pointers (11-for-15 in the second half), beating Oklahoma State 92-91 to advance to the second round. Michigan will meet the winner of Louisville and Jacksonville State.

Michael Phelps gets in on the madness

The all-time most decorated Olympian said last year that his son – less than a year old – will be going to Michigan, so it’s no surprise to see the swimmer show his support during the Wolverines’ game:

Another Baylor upset brewing?

No. 14 New Mexico State leads No. Baylor 40-38 at halftime in Tulsa. Remember that the Bears lost in the first round as a No. 3 seed in 2015 and as a No. 5 in 2016.

Also, their mascots had a dance-off:
