Robert Griffin III’s pursuit of an NFL career revival won’t carry on in Cleveland.
The Browns released the quarterback on Friday, the team announced.
The move was not tied to the Browns’ acquisition of quarterback Brock Osweiler via trade with the Houston Texans, a person with team’s intentions said. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the team was still attempting to move Osweiler in another deal.
Griffin was due a $750,000 roster bonus Saturday.
The 2012 offensive rookie of the year struggled to get on track in his restart with the Browns this season, suffering a shoulder injury in Week 1. He returned in December but threw just two touchdown passes in five games.
Griffin now hits an open market in which several teams have already made moves for quarterbacks. He visited with the New York Jets last year, and the team still has a need at the position.
