Robbie Ray making early lead stand vs. Brewers

The Diamondbacks scored a run off Chase Anderson on Sunday – the first team to do so in three weeks – and left-hander Robbie Ray was protecting it through the early innings at Chase Field.

Consecutive hits by David Peralta (single) and Paul Goldschmidt (double) put runners on second and third for the Diamondbacks with one out in the first inning, and Peralta scored on Jake Lamb’s RBI ground out.

That’s all the Diamondbacks have been able to muster against Anderson, whose string of 21 2/3 scoreless innings was snapped with that first-inning run.

Ray, meanwhile, was throwing well, as has been the norm of late. The Brewers had scoring chances in both the third and fourth innings but Ray managed to wiggle out of trouble.

In the third, after a pair of walks put runners on first and second with one out, Ray got Eric Thames to pop out before striking out Domingo Sanatana to end the inning.

Hernan Perez led off the fourth with a single to center and stole second, but Ray retired the next three batters to leave him stranded.

Wilhemsen designated, Godley or Delgado to stay in rotation

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo has been around Major League Baseball for a long time, but it doesn’t make the hard conversations any less difficult.

On Saturday night, Lovullo informed reliever Tom Wilhelmsen he had been designated for assignment following Friday’s 3-2 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers.

“It’s unfortunate for us and him that this move had to be made,” said the first-year manager. “He’s meant so much to this team, a leader down in the bullpen. But I think he’s passed along the torch to the rest of the guys.”

Wilhemsen, 33, was 1-1 with a 4.44 ERA in 26 1/3 innings and acted as a veteran presence on a relatively young pitching staff. Lovullo said he personally thanked the Tucson native for what he’s meant to both himself and the team.

“He’s helped create a little bit of balance for me on the field,” said Lovullo, whose Diamondbacks have won 10 of their last 11 games at Chase Field. “He’s showed me the art of laughter in crucial moments, and that nothing is ever as bad as it seems. He takes that approach.”

2017 MLB MOCK DRAFT: Projecting the first round

The Diamondbacks have seven days to either trade Wilhemsen or place him on irrevocable outright waivers. If he is neither trader nor claimed on waivers, Wilhemsen can accept an outright assignment to the minor leagues or elect free agency.

As the corresponding move, right-hander Zack Greinke was reinstated off the paternity list and rejoins the 25-man roster. But the departure of Wilhemsen will also have a ripple effect for the rest of the pitching staff.

With an open spot in the bullpen, it appears both Zack Godley and Randall Delgado will remain with the big club—with one of them occupying the fifth spot in the starting rotation.

On the heels of another impressive start on Friday, Godley has dazzled with a 2.44 ERA in 44 1/3 innings this season. But Delgado has also thrown well in place of injured starter Taijuan Walker, posting a 3.15 ERA in 20 innings of work.

“There’s an opening there, and we’re going to try to figure out the best solution for that starting spot and then who goes to the bullpen,” Lovullo said.

Lovullo expects that Walker could come off the disabled list and start Wednesday in Detroit, if all goes well during the final steps of his rehab.

Lineup

Sunday’s game

Brewers at Diamondbacks

When: 1:10 p.m.

Where: Chase Field (Roof hotline: 602-462-6262)

Ray has won four straight starts and over that stretch has struck out 41 batters in 30 1/3 innings while walking only five. One of those starts was against the Brewers on May 25 when he shut out Milwaukee on two hits over seven innings in a 4-0 win. Anderson, the former Diamondback, has been on a roll of his own, winning three straight starts, including a dominant outing against Arizona on May 27. He allowed just one hit and struck out 11 batters. Anderson has walked just five batters in his last 21 2/3 innings.

D-Backs’ Robbie Ray, Brewers’ Chase Anderson eager for friendly matchup

When they were teammates with the Diamondbacks two years ago, left-hander Robbie Ray and right-hander Chase Anderson were almost inseparable. They would play catch together before games, share meals together, play table tennis against each other. They would sometimes ride to the ballpark together. Even their wives are good friends.

On Sunday, they will face each other for the first time in their big-league careers. Both are in the midst of standout seasons and are throwing as well as – if not better – than they ever have. Both look like they might be turning a corner in their career.

They say they’re excited for the matchup. Their wives, however, might not be.

“I think our wives are just champing-at-the-bit nervous,” Anderson said. “We’ve always talked about wanting to face each other, and our wives are like, ‘No, no, no. We don’t want to have to watch that.’ I think my wife gets more nervous than me when I pitch, and when you’re facing your friends, it’s even more so. I think they’re ready for the game to be over.”

Zack Godley’s status uncertain, even after latest gem for D-Backs

Zack Godley mowed through a major-league lineup again on Saturday evening. He did not need many pitches. He did not allow many baserunners. He started a game and the Diamondbacks won it, a script that’s played out more often than not in the season’s first 10 weeks.

And yet Godley stood in front of his locker after a 3-2 win over the Milwaukee Brewers unsure whether his next outing would be with the Diamondbacks or the Reno Aces. Though he was thoroughly impressive in giving up just two hits and two runs in 6 2/3 innings at Chase Field – and though the outing was reminiscent of all of his previous starts – his manager was making no promises.

“Yes, there are some moves that are imminent,” Torey Lovullo said. “We don’t know what they are. We’re going to walk through that and talk about it as a group as we move forward.”

Diamondbacks reliever Silvino Bracho’s ‘wiggle’ keying recent improvement

Reliever Silvino Bracho has quietly had two encouraging outings since his fourth call-up this season on June 8, allowing just one hit over 2 2/3 innings while striking out three. That’s a far cry from his first outing for Arizona this year, when he was shelled for three runs in 1/3 of an inning on April 24 and was optioned to Triple-A Reno two days later.

One reason for the improvement: About a month ago, Bracho incorporated a “wiggle” into his pitching motion. After coming to a set position, he wiggles his glove in an attempt to change his timing and make hitters more uncomfortable at the plate.

“When I got sent down I got down in my mind and decided to try to do something different to get people out,” Bracho said. “I’m trying to change the tempo for the hitter.”
