A confrontation during a Scottsdale traffic stop led to a police shooting, a pursuit by law enforcement and an early-morning crash in south Phoenix, authorities said.

The shooting happened near 74th Street and Cactus Road around 11:35 p.m. Sunday.

The man, who has not been identified at this time, was taken into custody after the crash, officials said. He was hospitalized Monday morning.

A Scottsdale police officer suffered minor injuries, officials said.

Intersections in Scottsdale and Phoenix were closed as police investigated and reopened just before 10 a.m. on Monday.

The traffic stop occurred about 11:35 p.m. near 74th Street and Scottsdale Road in Scottsdale, with the pursuit ending in a crash at 32nd Street and Broadway Road, according to Officer Kevin Watts, Scottsdale police spokesman.

After an officer pulled over a vehicle in Scottsdale, the driver acted erratically and did not follow instructions, Watts said. The driver reached within the vehicle and when the officer tried to stop that behavior, the driver took off, dragging the officer several feet until he was able to break free, Watts said.

The vehicle spun around, facing the officer, and the officer fired at the vehicle, Watts said.

The car drove off. Law enforcement ended the chase in Scottsdale because of the danger but tracked the vehicle and picked up the pursuit, which ended in the crash in south Phoenix.

Cactus Road was closed between Scottsdale and Hayden roads in Scottsdale for investigation. The intersection of Broadway Road and 32nd Street in Phoenix was closed as well.

All lane restrictions as a result of the police shooting were lifted just before 10 a.m. Monday, according to Scottsdale police.
