The Seattle Seahawks accumulated a series of injuries on Thursday night against the Arizona Cardinals, but none was more costly than the one to their star cornerback.

Richard Sherman suffered a ruptured Achilles in the third quarter of the Seahawks’ 22-16 win and will miss the remainder of the season, coach Pete Carroll said. 

Carroll said Sherman would undergo further tests, but that there was “no coming back” from the injury until after surgery.

“He’s been a bastion of consistency, competitiveness and toughness,” Carroll said. “We’re going to miss the heck out of him.”

Sherman said he had been playing through an Achilles injury since a Week 5 game against the Los Angeles Rams. Despite trying to avoid drastic cuts in recent weeks, Sherman felt a pop and quickly knew the extent of the injury.

“It’s one of those things that just didn’t want to heal,” Sherman said in a postgame news conference.

Sherman has never missed a game in his seven-year NFL career. He has been an outspoken critic of the league’s Thursday night games.

“Poopfest. It’s terrible,” Sherman told ESPN in 2016. “We got home like 1 o’clock in the morning, something like that, on Monday, and then you’ve got to play again. Congratulations, NFL, you did it again. But they’ve been doing it all season, so I guess we’re the last ones to get the middle finger.”

Strong safety Kam Chancellor (stinger), left tackle Duane Brown (ankle), defensive tackle Jarran Reed (hamstring) and running back C.J. Prosise (ankle) were among the other Seahawks players to suffer injuries on Thursday.

Sherman is just the latest notable NFL player to be sidelined for the rest of the season with an injury, joining a list that already included Packers QB Aaron Rodgers, Texans DE J.J. Watt, Browns OT Joe Thomas, Giants WR Odell Beckham, Chiefs S Eric Berry, Cardinals RB David Johnson, Colts QB Andrew Luck and Texans QB Deshaun Watson.
