Winter holidays in the desert are a little quirky, I think. You can wear flip-flops on Halloween, and I always worry about the pumpkins melting. Snowflakes on Christmas cards? Not for me. Though I sure do love being able to sit on the patio for Thanksgiving.

But no matter the temperature, it’s the family traditions that pull the holidays together.

One of our favorites is the early Thanksgiving newspaper, loaded with holiday shopping deals. We pull it apart, sort through the inserts, plot our strategies, cross-check our timing.

This year will be no different. The Arizona Republic early Thanksgiving edition will be available the day before Thanksgiving at Fry’s food stores and other retailers throughout the Valley. It will be chock-full of the sales circulars, Black Friday deals, shopping tips and holiday happenings.

It also will have another of our favorite traditions: the giant crosswords package. So, when you’re a little sluggish from all the stuffing and shopping — before you start making the turkey-cranberry-gravy sandwiches (don’t judge me!) — try out a crossword.

Whatever your traditions, a very Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at The Republic,

Mi-Ai Parrish, president and publisher
