Most high school football teams — forever it seems in Arizona at least — have stayed in the locker room during the playing of the national anthem.

But now that someNFL players and teams have made it an issue by kneeling, locking arms, or standing, during the anthem, especially after President Donald Trump’s remarks during a political rally in Alabama last week, the spotlight was turned on Mesa Red Mountain’s football team before Thursday night’s game.

The players were all on the sideline during the national anthem. The players have done this since the start of the season.

“That is something I instituted,” first-year coach Mike Peterson said. “But first and foremost, I remember (Coach) John Wrenn’s Hamilton Huskies doing it (in the early 2000s) and though it was very classy. And the young men are not sitting in the locker room waiting and waiting and waiting.”

Wrenn, who left Hamilton after the 2005 season, said he felt it was important “for our players to be out for something that represents our country.”

After President Trump remarked during his rally last week that NFL players should be taken off the field and fired for kneeling during the national anthem, it set off a firestorm of debate. Teams made statements in various ways last week — kneeling, locking arms  while standing, staying in the tunnel during the national anthem.

Peterson said his intention was not to be part of the political debate.

“I have not and probably will not address the kneeling,” Peterson said. “I had forgotten about the kneeling and did not even think it would trickle to us, until all the madness this past weekend.

“And it did not even cross my mind when we started (coming out to the sideline for the national anthem). Again, I just thought it was classy and got the young men out of the locker room where they are simply confined and waiting and waiting for kickoff.”

Peterson said that none of his players have knelt that he knows of.

“I am looking at the flag with my hand over my heart like I feel I should,” Peterson said. “However, if someone wanted to kneel, I would not take that away from them, if that is what their conscience dictates.

“An ex-player of mine, who is a grown man, with a wife and a family, put it like this on his Facebook feed, and I thought it put it in perspective for me, ‘If you think kneeling is about the flag and the anthem, then you must think Rosa Parks was protesting public transportation.'”

YOUR TAKE: NFL protests during anthem draw mixed reaction

Peterson said he believes people should have the right to choose whether to kneel during the anthem as a protest.

“Now, they do not get to choose the consequences, but they are free to choose their actions,” he said. “You know, those guys are paid to play football, not stand for the anthem. It seems to me like they are performing their duties as contracted.”

Peterson said he has been to all kinds of sporting events, from high school to college to pro, and has seen people sit, stand, wear a hat.

“Some take the time to cut into the beer line, while another is standing and looking at the TV feed, some sing along, some do not take off their hat,” he said. “It really runs the gamut.”
