Why did Josh Jackson not work out for Boston?

Midway through the second quarter Thursday, with Houston leading the Suns by 25 points, Rockets coach Mike D’Antoni stood up to complain to an official about something.

“Mike, sit down, you’re up 40,” a fan said.

D’Antoni turned around.

“It’s 25,” D’Antoni replied. “You can’t count.”

Besides the fact it’s never wise to get into a spitting contest with the sharp-tongued D’Antoni, the fan did have a point.

It may have been 25. But it felt like 40. Or 400.

In their only nationally televised game of the season (excluding NBA TV), the Suns set some dubious and unbecoming records in their 142-116 loss to the Rockets at Talking Stick Resort Arena.

Houston’s 90 first-half points were the most by a Suns opponent in franchise history. The 90 points also tied for the second-most points in the first half in NBA history. The record, Suns fans might remember: Phoenix scored 107 points against the Paul Westhead we’re-not-even-trying-to-play-defense Denver Nuggets in 1990.

How bad was it?

The 142 points were the most given up this season by Phoenix, and that includes the worst loss in franchise history on opening night.

The Suns scored 42 points in the second quarter, Troy Daniels tied a franchise record with six 3-pointers in the quarter – and Phoenix was outscored by three.

Chris Paul had a double-double – 11 points and 10 assists – in 16 minutes.

James Harden scored 33 points – in the first half. He finished with 48 points and seven assists.

If nothing else, the Suns made their seventh loss in eight games memorable.

The loss was hardly surprising. Houston has the best record in the Western Conference and was smarting after a loss to Toronto on Tuesday. But 90 points in a half?

“If you lose by that much, the effort isn’t there,” guard Devin Booker said.

Interim coach Jay Triano agreed, to a point. He thought the Suns were into the game, but once Houston started burying 3-point shot after 3-point shot – 21 in all – Phoenix got discouraged.

“I think what happens halfway through you get a little disappointed and you just go, ‘It doesn’t matter what we’re going to do here.’ And they’re a strange team to play. It’s tough to prepare for playing a team that’s going to shoot as many 3’s and not take any 2’s and get to the rim. And that’s the way they play.”

Believe it or not, there were some positives for the Suns. Daniels had a season-high 23 points and made 7 of 13 3-point shots. Booker, playing more point guard than he has in any game this season, had a double-double (18 points, 10 assists) in 30 minutes.

And in his debut for Phoenix, center Greg Monroe finished with a double-double (20 points, 11 assists).

“I thought he was good,” Triano said. “He just knows how to play the game and lets the game come to him. He wasn’t overpowering in any way but he was very solid, very solid.”

Monroe, asked how his night went, just shrugged his shoulders.

“As a team, we just have to give a better effort,” he said. “We didn’t have any resistance in the first half. They got too many open shots. We kind of just let them play their game. It felt good personally to be back out there, but it’s all about winning and losing. We definitely have to come out with a better effort (Friday against the Lakers).”

By the end of the game, nearly everyone in the crowd – what was left of the crowd – was rooting for 7-foot-1, 210-pound Houston center Zhou Qi to score a point. They roared every time he touched the ball and booed when he was called for a foul.

Qi finished 0-for-3.

He was the only Rockets’ player who didn’t score.
