Suns center Alan Williams will miss at least half the season- maybe more- with a torn meniscus, General Manager Ryan McDonough said Monday at Suns media day.

Williams had surgery on Monday morning with Dr. Tom Carter, McDonough said.

It was reported that Williams partially tore his meniscus after landing on a teammate’s foot during a workout.

Suns rookie guard Davon Reed will miss four to six months after tearing his meniscus in August.

The Suns re-signed Williams to a three-year deal worth $17 million in July.

Center Alex Len will sign his qualifying offer with the Suns this week, according to a report.

Williams, 24, was among Phoenix’s best stories last season. The 6-8 forward – a Phoenix native – spent most of the first half on the bench, gaining attention for his cheering and support. He not only became a fan favorite, but also a positive locker-room presence. Once management shut down key players after the All-Star break, Williams got his chance on the court.

He didn’t disappoint.

During one stretch, Williams posted six double-doubles in seven games. In 24 games after the All-Star break, he averaged 11.4 points and 9.1 rebounds in just 22.6 minutes. The 9.1 rebounds ranked 19th in the league over that stretch. Overall, Williams’ 15 double-doubles ranked 35th.
