Phoenix police opened a homicide investigation on Friday morning after a woman was found dead in her south Phoenix home, police said.
On Friday, police responded to a call from a witness entering the home and finding Sheronda Dyer, 41, dead around 11 a.m. near 59th Avenue and Broadway Road, police said.
Police arrested Eddie Lauderdale, 35, on Saturday. No motive was provided. Lauderdale was charged on suspicion of one count of homicide, one count of crimes against children and one count involving weapons and explosives, according to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office booking website.
Lauderdale and Dyer have a child together, Phoenix police said Sunday.
Police did not release the cause of death but reported the victim showed “obvious signs of trauma.” Dyer was found by a family member, police said.
In a press conference on Friday afternoon, Sgt. Vincent Cole with the Phoenix Police Department said a SWAT team arrived on scene that morning to secure the area prior to investigators entering the home, but no threat was found, he said.
“Detectives here are … trying to piece together what led up to this incident,” Cole reported. Police helicopters were deployed to circle the area in the afternoon as a standard procedure to assist the investigation, he said.
“This is never an easy scene to go to,” Cole said. “Anytime somebody loses a loved one, it’s difficult to deal with. Our first responders as well feel that loss — police and fire alike.”
Cole said the area around the home would be closed off for a few more hours as police continued its investigation.
No additional information about the victim or suspect was provided. The investigation is ongoing.
Cole asked for anyone with information about the incident to contact Phoenix Crime Stop at 602-262-6151 or Silent Witness at 480-948-6377.
