A police situation in central Phoenix prompted officials to shut down a portion of westbound Interstate 10, causing massive traffic backups Friday evening.

The westbound lanes of the freeway at Seventh Street and the exit ramp at Fifth Avenue were closed as Phoenix police worked a situation involving a person sitting on the edge of the Third Avenue bridge over I-10, police said.

A Phoenix Fire Department ladder truck could be seen raised toward the bridge at the Deck Park Tunnel.

The closures caused backups along westbound I-10 back to Van Buren Street and delayed traffic on Loop 202 westbound up to 32nd Street, the Arizona Department of Transportation said.

Further details were not immediately available.

On Thursday, Interstate 17 was shut for more than three hours in both directions after a man climbed on the top of a pedestrian overpass threatening to jump south of Glendale Avenue. He eventually was brought down.
