Gilbert Perry is on the doorstep of making history.

And if the Pumas beat top-seed Phoenix Mountain Pointe on Friday night to reach the 6A football final, it could lead to a major recruiting door to open that senior quarterback Brock Purdy has waited a long time for.

“I feel something will open up, especially if I take my team to state (championship),” said Purdy, 6-foot-1, 197 pounds, who broke former Chandler star Bryce Perkins’ single-season 6A record for touchdown passes in a season with 48 in just 12 games. “Hopefully, that opens some eyes.”

Purdy has been on the University of Arizona football sideline for the Wildcats’ last two home games, invitations showing they have some interest.

But other than them, Purdy said he has not heard from any other Power 5 schools.

On Monday, Purdy landed an offer from Southern Utah, which came a couple of weeks after picking up a Montana State offer.

If a quarterback falls through during the early signing window in December at a big college, that could lead to Purdy being next in line.

From what Perry coach Preston Jones has been hearing, that might be the case.

Jones said that even after an All-Arizona season as a junior, Purdy’s decision-making is better and he is physically stronger.

“I think the game slowed down for him,” Jone said. “I think one of the deals with the big schools, I think a lot of them like him, but a lot of them have commitments. I think Dec.18, things will change.

“Colleges have offers out to their QBs. QBs are special. If you have this QB here, and you’re talking to another QB, it’s like cheating on your girlfriend. I think they know. And he’s waiting.

“A few schools have told us, he’s our next guy, but they’re not going to go out and advertise that.”

Gilbert Perry senior quarterback Brock Purdy went through 10 football games this season before picking up a college football scholarship offer.

Purdy, on the verge of another 3,000-yards passing season, tweeted Monday that he was offered by Montana State.

“The coaching staff is great and love my game,” Purdy said. “I like how the college is all about football up there.”

Purdy (6-1, 197) still doesn’t have a Power 5 conference offer, despite putting up mind-boggling numbers against strong competition the last two seasons.

He has previous offers from UNLV, Northern Arizona and New Mexico State.

“I’m still being patient,” Purdy said. “I don’t know when I’ll decide on a college yet.”

Perry opens the 6A state playoffs on Friday at home against No. 13 Anthem Boulder Creek.

Purdy is on azcentral sports’ Player of the Year watch list. He has passed for 2,937 yards and 38 touchdowns and run for 725 yards and seven TDs this season.
