The Gila County Sheriff’s Office said they found four dead on Saturday afternoon after flash flooding had occurred in the area.

At around 3:15 p.m., the Sheriff’s Office received a 9-1-1 call about a search-and-rescue operation around the Cold Springs Swimming Hole in the Payson area, officials said. 

“The Payson area experienced heavy rain throughout the region causing flash flooding in the area,” said Sheriff J. Adam Shepard in a media release. “Individuals were reported missing and search and rescue operations have begun.”

The Sheriff’s Office said that deputies, Tonto Rim Search and Rescue, the Arizona Department of Public Safety, the Whispering Pines Fire Department and the U.S. Forest Service have been dispatched and are actively working the scene.

Authorities said four people have been confirmed dead and search operations continue for anyone else that could be potentially missing.
