A shooting early Sunday morning in an Avondale sports bar’s parking lot left one person dead and another injured, Avondale police said.

Sgt. Thomas Alt, an Avondale police spokesman, said an officer was in his patrol car at about 2 a.m. when he heard what he thought was a gunshot near the Lighthouse sports bar and grill at El Mirage and Indian School roads. When he got out of his vehicle, the officer saw a man who had been shot in the parking lot and began to administer first aid, but the man had died, Alt said.

A woman was injured in the incident and was taken to a hospital, Alt said, adding that the incident started over an altercation.

Police are looking for a person of interest, who was described as an African-American man driving a new maroon or burgundy Dodge Challenger with specialized black rims, Alt said.

Police didn’t release the name of the victims or any other details about the shooting.

Police were asking that anyone with information about the shooting to call the Avondale Police Department at 623-333-7000.
