The Sun Devils are on the field at Camp Tontozona Wednesday morning, and the offensive line was among those getting early work in the pines.

Much of the off-season focus on ASU’s offense has centered on Alabama transfer quarterback Blake Barnett, who will battle with Many Wilkins for the starting position. But a bigger question looms with the front line.

Last season, ASU’s quarterback problems were exacerbated by a failure to produce in the running game, as the Sun Devils averaged just 88.4 yards per game to rank 11th in the Pac-12 conference.

The offensive line also allowed 3.42 sacks per game in 2016, a mark that ranked 119th out of 128 FBS teams.

This year’s returning starters include senior center A.J. McCollum and junior tackle Quinn Bailey.

The team is also set to practice on Thursday before a scheduled day off on Friday. However, the team could potentially use Friday to practice if it’s needed.

Camp Tontozona weather

The field was a bit soggy for Day 1 practice and it rained during practice for about 30 minutes for Tuesday’s Day 2.

Wednesday’s forecast originally called for a heavy afternoon thunderstorm with a high temperature of 80 and a low in the mid 60s.

But, blue skies were overhead as practice started on Wednesday.

The forecast for rain generally holds steady throughout the week, although Thursday appears to set for the lightest rainfall.

The forecast for Saturday’s final Camp Tontozona practice calls for a high of 83 and chance for an afternoon thunderstorms, according to the National Weather Service.
