No. 18 Michigan State hockey scored in overtime Sunday for a 1-0 win over No. 16 Arizona State in East Lansing, Mich.

Mitch Lewandowski scored 3:17 into the 5-on-5, five-minute overtime giving the Spartans a weekend split. ASU won 4-3 on Saturday.

Shots on goal were even at 36 Sunday with both teams going 0-of-3 on power play.

“It’s a tough loss,” ASU coach Greg Powers said. “I feel for our guys who battled hard. We just couldn’t find the back of the net. You’re not going to win the game if you don’t score. Defensively we were pretty good and don’t think we gave up very much.”

ASU fell to 9-5-2, suffering its first loss since Nov. 8. The Sun Devils next are at Nebraska Omaha (7-7-2) on Saturday. Michigan State improved to 9-8-1.

No. 16 ASU hockey downs Michigan State on Walker game-winning goal

No. 16-ranked Arizona State hockey gave up a two-goal lead in the third period Saturday night but still beat No. 18 Michigan State 4-3 in East Lansing, Mich.

Johnny Walker scored the winning goal on a redirection at 14:20 of the third, his 10th goal of the season.

Michigan State trailed 3-1 going into the third but pulled even on goals by Patrick Khodorenko at 4:59 and Nico Muller at 9:16.

ASU led 2-0 after the first period on goals by PJ Marrocco and James Sanchez. Michigan State scored first in the second before ASU’s defender Jacob Wilson made it 3-1.

The Spartans had a 35-26 edge in shots on goal.

ASU improved to 9-4-2 and is unbeaten over the last six games. Michigan State dropped to 8-8-1. The teams meet again Sunday.
