Scottsdale Notre Dame senior football player Wyatt Harris this summer had the idea to create a Valley-wide food challenge with other schools.
It starts tonight when the Saints play host to Buckeye Verrado in a season opener.
The food drive benefits St. Mary’s Food Bank, inviting Phoenix-area high school and youth football teams to participate.
According to a release, teams will collect canned food and donations at a home game over the first month of the season with the top three teams by weight getting a cash donation to their football program.
“At my old school, we did a smaller school food drive and raised 600 pounds,” said Harris, who starts at middle linebacker for the Saints. “I thought probably be great to get more schools involved, especially during this time because of COVID. Families need help to get food on the tables. With the sport I play, I can help.
“We want to put a little competition out there.”
So far, Notre Dame, Cave Creek Cactus Shadows and some youth football programs have gotten involved, Harris said.
Re/Max Alliance Group, the Momentum Title Agency and the Fine Berger Insurance Agency are sponsoring the prize donations, the release states. NDP will host their drive this week. The Saints will be participating but will not be eligible for the prizes.
All youth and high school football teams are invited to participate in Souper Bowl 2021
and have a chance to win $500, the release says.
To participate, register at https://forms.gle/zGWzAVSsn2YjaaWPA and sign up for a time slot to drop off donations at https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0F4CAEAE23A6F8C61-souper.
Food items are to be brought to the St. Mary’s Food Bank on Sept. 18. The top three teams who bring in the most weight will receive a donation to their football program, the release said.
If the Sept. 18 date doesn’t work, email [email protected] to arrange another time.
“My parents always taught me to always give back to the community and to be selfless,” Harris said. “Not everyone is provided for like I am. It’s imperative for people who have stuff to give to people who don’t.”
