An NBA referee was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated after he crashed a vehicle into a tree in Lake Havasu City, according to a police report. 

Ronald Garretson, 60, was arrested following a collision shortly after 7 p.m. Wednesday near Civic Center Boulevard and McCullough Boulevard, Lake Havasu City police said. 

Garretson showed signs of impairment, according to police.

Garretson told police that he circled around and someone hit him but he was not wearing a seatbelt, according to the report. 

And officer detected the odor of alcohol on Garretson, police said.  

After a field sobriety test, Garretson was booked into jail on a count of extreme driving under the influence with bond set at $4,500. 

Garretson is an NBA referee who has officiated almost 2,000 games over the past 31 seasons, according to the National Basketball Referees Association website. 

He also has two years of officiating experience with the Continental Basketball Association and two years of high school basketball officiating in Arizona, according to the NBRA website. 

Garretson could not be reached for comment.

NBA spokesman Mike Bass provided the following statement to The  Arizona Republic:  “We are in the process of gathering additional information.  We are grateful that it appears no one was seriously injured.”
