Monsoon activity returned to the Phoenix area on Thursday evening, as storms that had formed in Pinal County earlier began moving into the region by early evening, followed by an uptick in activity from the north.

A dust-storm warning was issued for northwest Pinal County after 6:15 p.m., including Casa Grande and Interstate 10 south of the Valley. Dust and wind eventually moved through much of the southeast Valley, followed by rain in some areas.

In east Mesa, the Flood Control District of Maricopa County measured 0.20 of an inch of rainfall by 8:45 p.m. Queen Creek tallied 0.16 of an inch. Lesser amounts were recorded in other areas of the southeast Valley.

Earlier, storms formed after 4:30 p.m. over areas of southwest and western Maricopa County, including the White Tank and Sierra Estrella mountains, as a band of storms was moving northwest toward the Phoenix area, the National Weather Service said.

Later, the National Weather Service issued a severe-thunderstorm warning for the far northeast Valley, including Carefree, Cave Creek and northern Scottsdale.

An area of northeast Scottsdale had recorded 0.20 of an inch of rain, according to the Flood Control District.

Statewide, the heaviest rains were occurring in the southwestern areas of Arizona along Interstate 8 near Dateland and areas of far western Maricopa County near I-10.

Flooded washes were disrupting traffic on some roads, the Arizona Department of Transportation said.

One of the highest rainfall measurements recorded by the Flood Control District of Maricopa County was near Tonopah in far western Maricopa County, where 0.79 of an inch of rain fell.

The National Weather Service issued a flash-flood watch for Friday in western Coconino and Yavapai counties.

A blowing-dust advisory was issued for southern Arizona earlier Thursday afternoon.

Warm air coming up from Mexico is creating moisture that’s here to stay in the Phoenix area until the weekend, according to the National Weather Service’s Andrew Deemer.

The National Weather Service estimates that on Friday, Phoenix will be partly cloudy with a 20 percent chance of rain and a high of 97 degrees. It will dip just into the 70s at night before sunrise on Saturday.

Saturday was expected to be much like Friday, with a high of only 96 degrees, but there is a 50 percent chance of rain on that day.

An upswing in total monsoon activity is expected for all of central and southwest Arizona through Saturday, according to Deemer.

More than likely, the Valley will see rain at some point during this weekend stretch.

Sunday returns everything back to normal with highs near 102 degrees and overwhelming sunshine that will last deep into next week.
