Skateboarder Jagger Eaton of Mesa finished fourth at the World Street Championships in Rome on Sunday, qualifying for the Tokyo Olympics after missing out in park.
Eaton, 20, competing on an injured ankle, was the second highest U.S. finisher in Rome behind silver medalist Nyjah Huston. He earned enough points with his fourth-place finish to make the inaugural U.S. Olympic street team along with Huston and Jake Ilardi, who took seventh in Rome.
Eaton was seventh May 23 at the Dew Tour men’s park final in Des Moines, dropping out of the top three Americans in the final U.S. Olympic park qualifying event.
Eaton was ranked No. 21 in the world in street and sixth highest American going into Rome, falling behind in that event due to injuries.
Eaton grew up skating at Kids That Rip in Mesa, an indoor park that his father Geoff Eaton built inside Desert Devils Gymnastics.
The Eaton family, going back to Desert Devils founder Stormy Eaton (Jagger’s grandfather) has been working toward having an Olympian in gymnastics and now skateboarding since the late 1980s.
