Mesa police were investigating a shooting involving an officer that occurred Friday night.
The shooting occurred about 7:45 p.m. at a restaurant, the Ojos Locos Sports Cantina, on Alma School Road just south of U.S. 60, police said in a press release early Saturday.
Police explained that officers responded to the area when the restaurant’s management reported “they were having problems” with several customers described as disorderly and causing a disturbance in the restaurant.
While in the parking lot gathering information from the people involved, police say a struggle began with one of them and then the officer-involved shooting occurred, the press release states.
At the scene Friday night, police confirmed that one person was taken to a hospital with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. Police also confirmed that no officers were injured.
Mesa police said Saturday that detectives were in the early stages of its investigation and would provide updates as they beome available.
