An assistant football coach at Mesa Community College died of injuries froma fight outside a bar Saturday night, the Phoenix Police Department said.
Benjamin McIvor, 44, was involved in an altercation with a 47-year-old man outside Padre Murphy’s, a sports bar near 44th Avenue and Bell Road at about 10 p.m., Sgt. Jonathan Howard said.
Howard said McIvor fell and hit his on the ground during the fight. He was taken to a local hospital, where he died, Howard said.
McIvor was the defensive line coach and special teams coordinator for the MCC football team, according to the team’s website.
The 2017 season was his third at MCC and 20th coaching overall.
His MCC profile page said he was also a teacher at Glendale High School and was the head coach for the track program.
Maricopa County Community College district officials also confirmed McIvor’s death.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of Coach McIvor. Our thoughts are with his family and friends during this most difficult time.” said Matthew Hasson, district spokesman. “Coach McIvor was well-respected by his colleagues and our student athletes and will certainly be missed.”
MCC football head coach Ryan Felker and many current and former players also expressed sadness on social media Monday about McIvor’s death.
The other man involved in the fight left the scene but later was contacted by police and has been cooperative, Howard said. He was not identified by police.
McIvor was married and had three children, according to the MCC website.
Howard said the investigation is ongoing.
