Twenty Arizona high school students recently were awarded four-year Flinn Scholarships, each valued at more than $115,000, to study at any Arizona public university.

The scholarship covers the cost of tuition and room and board at one of the state’s three public universities, provides funding for at least two study-abroad experiences, including to China, as well as an off-campus internship.

All 20 scholars have elected to attend Arizona State University or University of Arizona in the fall.

Typically, Flinn Scholars:

  • Maintain at least a 3.5 grade-point average.
  • Rank among the top five in their class.
  • Score a 1360 on the SAT or 29 on the ACT.
  • Participate in several leadership roles and extracurricular activities.

By comparison, the average ACT score in Arizona was 20 in 2016.

More than 750 Arizona high-school seniors applied for the this year’s scholarships.

The recipients represent 17 different high schools from the Phoenix and Tucson metro areas, as well as smaller towns throughout Arizona.

Arcadia High School in Phoenix and Hamilton High School in Chandler can boast two Flinn Scholars this year.

Five high schools are celebrating their first Flinn Scholar: Desert View High School in Tucson, Tri-City College Prep in Prescott, Santa Cruz Valley Union High School in Eloy, Liberty High School in Peoria and Mohave High School in Bullhead City.

A homeschooled student also received a scholarship, marking the second year a homeschooled student has received the Flinn Scholarship.

The recipients plan to pursue a range of studies such as biomedical engineering, astrophysics, neuroscience, business, urban planning and journalism.
