Open or closed?

Diamondbacks CEO Derrick Hall said the decision to open the roof at Chase Field for the game will be made by Major League Baseball, though he expects officials to ask for input from the team.

With a forecasted high on Wednesday of 97 degrees, Hall worries that it might be too warm to open the roof.

“My fear is the temperature is going to be pretty high for a jam-packed house,” Hall said. “Typically, what we’ll do is let people move around, which you can’t do with a sellout. As much as I want to have it open, I don’t feel like it’s right.”

Lineup questions

Lovullo said he had not yet decided on whether he’d go with Jeff Mathis or Chris Iannetta behind the plate on Wednesday, though he has strongly hinted that Mathis would be the starter, in large part based on his relationship with starter Zack Greinke.

The other questions in his lineup, he said, were those involving left fielder David Peralta and shortstop Ketel Marte, and those were going to depend on how workouts went on Tuesday and how the players were feeling on Wednesday.

“They both had really good workdays (Monday), but we might ramp them up a little bit,” Lovullo said. “They just came out to test their own boundaries, but we might ask them to do a little bit more. So under our guidelines they need to fall under a few things, which if they pass that test, which I think they will – it’s trending in that direction – and I think we’ll be in good shape to say they’re ready to go.”

Owings a “long shot” for wild-card game

Though his manager called him a “long shot” to make Wednesday’s wild-card game roster, infielder Chris Owings continued to prepare in hopes of playing in the do-or-die game despite missing the past two months following a broken finger.

“For sure,” Owings said when asked if he thinks he’s ready. “It’s their decision, their call. It’s going to be whatever is best for the team. I feel good. I just keep taking little steps every day and we’ll see where it is.”

Owings had five at-bats in an instructional league game on Monday, and he was planning to get additional at-bats on Tuesday against Diamondbacks pitchers who threw in live batting practice sessions following the team’s workout at Chase Field.

But other than that, Owings hasn’t played since he was hit by a pitch on July 30, fracturing his right middle finger. Still, despite the limited at-bats, Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo has been talking about Owings as an option off the bench – if not to hit, then as a pinch-runner.

“I’ll probably have a discussion with him and the front office to see where he is at in this process,” Lovullo said on Tuesday afternoon. “But he is a long shot. And I want to say that anything’s possible. I know today’s the last day. So we’ll see what happens.”

Sherfy progressing

Right-hander Jimmie Sherfy threw an aggressive live batting practice session on Monday afternoon, and he said Tuesday he didn’t feel any hint of the “right triceps tightness” that has kept him out of games since Sept. 24.

“Everything went well,” he said. “It’s feeling great.”

Sherfy, a rookie reliever who did not allow an earned run in 10 2/3 innings in the big leagues this season, appeared to be a lock to make the postseason roster before the arm issue arose. Lovullo called Sherfy’s outing on Monday “very encouraging” but stopped short of assuring him a roster spot.

“I’m just taking it one day at a time,” Sherfy said. “I respect their decision either way, but it’d be awesome to make this roster, obviously.”
