J.D. Martinez was 0 for 5 as a Diamondback when he came to the plate in the sixth inning Monday.
He already had left five runners on base in the Diamondbacks’ eventual 10-2 win over Atlanta, two in the first inning when he hit a weak grounder to short, and the bases loaded in the fifth when he struck out. His first start at Chase Field wasn’t going as planned and impatient fans were wondering when they would see that big bat Martinez was supposed to bring with him from Detroit.
Then, in the sixth, Atlanta reliever Matt Wisler threw an 82-mph slider and Martinez hit it a long way. A really long way. It went 427 feet, to be exact, and when the ball banged against the batter’s eye in center field, Martinez had his first hit for Arizona, a three-run homer, and in the dugout and in the stands, there were high fives and big grins.
No one, it turned out, was happier than Martinez.
“It definitely felt good,” he said. “Just to finally be able to get that monkey off my back and get that first hit and contribute to the guys on the team.”
Martinez had plenty of help.. A.J. Pollock went 3 for 5 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Catcher Jeff Mathis had his second three-hit game of the season. Pitcher Zack Greinke was superb, allowing just five hits and two earned runs over eight innings while striking out six and not walking a batter in improving his record to 12-4.
“Just a really, really nice effort,” manager Torey Lovullo said of Greinke. “I think he probably made one, two mistakes and one of them was hit for a two-run home run, but other than that he was in command from start to finish.”
Still, the story was Martinez. It frustrated him to no end that the bone contusion he suffered after getting hit in the hand with a pitch in Cincinnati kept him out the entire series against the Washington Nationals, with the exception of one pinch-hit at-bat. He knew what fans, teammates, heck, the entire D-Backs organization hoped to get from him, and he wanted to deliver on that expectation.
“Everybody is excited to see you and you want to show everybody what you can do,” he said.
That moment finally came in the sixth inning, with a bang. Afterwards, as he emerged from the showers with a towel around his waist, Martinez’s sense of relief was palpable.
“I have a few years under my belt and my track record but still, it’s different,” he said. “You’re in a new state, a new team, new clubhouse, new guys, new brothers. Everything is a little different. You want to do well.”
Asked if there was a sense of finally being able to exhale, Martinez said, “Definitely.”
“I think there’s so many things that nobody knows about that’s going on inside of his life right now with the move,” Lovullo said. “Getting stuff from one place to the other, switching colors in his uniform and making sure the cleats are the right size. There are so many things and the list is endless, and I feel like this is when you finally start to get grounded and pay attention to the little things that matter that much – getting a good pitch during the at-bat or making a play and being prepared for the moment.
“So I know that he wants to impress people. That’s just the nature of the game and the nature of the moment when you move teams you want to do everything you can to help out. Today was a great moment for him.”
