Authorities are on the lookout for a man they said carjacked a 17-year-old girl on Tuesday at an elementary school near Cactus Road and 19th Avenue.
Officers with the Phoenix Police Department just after 8 a.m. initially responded to a neighborhood near Cactus Road and 23rd Avenue after receiving a report of a suspicious pickup truck in the area, said Phoenix police spokesperson Sgt. Maggie Cox.
The caller told police two people appeared to be asleep in the pickup truck, Cox said.
Officers contacted a man and a woman in the truck and determined the driver was providing a false name so they asked him to step out of the vehicle, Cox said.
At that point, the man drove backward into a police vehicle and then forward into a cement fence a couple of times, Cox said. No officers were injured.
The man then fled the area on foot, Cox said. The woman who was with him spoke with investigators and was released, according to Cox.
As police were setting up a perimeter they received another report of a 17-year-old girl who was carjacked at knifepoint while at Shaw Butte Elementary near Cactus Road and 19th Avenue, Cox said.
Officers arrived at the school a short time later; however, the man had already fled the area, Cox said.
Police later learned the girl was dropping off an item at the school for her sibling when she was approached by the man in the school’s administrative office, according to Cox.
He took her phone and keys at knifepoint before fleeing in her white 2003 Toyota Avalon bearing Arizona license plate ATA5DWA, Cox said. The girl was scratched during the incident but did not require treatment or hospitalization, Cox said.
Cox said there were no students near the office at the time of the carjacking. School was in session but the man never went past the administrative office, Cox said.
Cox described the man as white, between 30 and 40 years old, 5’11”, about 160 pounds and wearing a gray T-shirt and blue jeans. He is believed to be armed with a knife and should not be approached, Cox said.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact Phoenix police at 602-262-6151 or, to remain anonymous, Silent Witness at 480-948-6377 or 480-837-8446 for Spanish.
